'The Forgotten Era'

The transport industry from the end of the World War 2 until nationalization in 1949 has, to date, been largely ignored for its vital role in rebuilding Britain after years of conflict, loss, damage and economic strife. I am hoping to write a book based upon the experiences of World War II veterans who, after being de-mobbed, earned a living as lorry drivers working to rebuild Britain's economy and infrastructure immediately after the war.

I think this is an important time in the transport history of the UK, and in the social history, given the change they had to endure shifting from active service to civilian life and the task before them and I am trying to contact any of these brave men and women who survived the conflict, made the transition to peacetime and went on to lay the foundation of the industry we have today.

If I could get volunteers to see me from across the UK as a whole and across all sectors such as multi-drop, local, retail, public sector, trunking, international, etc. I think I would be able to assemble an accurate picture of how the industry operated, the vehicles used, conditions of service, the role transport played in the rebuilding process and the people who made it possible. I think this would constitute a valuable record and prove interesting to many modern day transport professionals.

If you are one of those who worked to re-build Britain, or if you know anyone who was, could you please either contact me by email
c.pidgeon2@ntlworld.com or telephone 01792 547953?

Looking for information on YHA 410J.

Richard Cook wrote in:
Hi, I was just wondering if you could help me find some information on the wereabouts of a Leyland Leopard bus YHA 410J.
This bus used to belong to a scout group that I am involved with in Shrewsbury and we sold it about 13 years ago for the bus to be restored. This bus was a very big part of our group and is sadly missed.
It would be so nice to see or to hear about where it is now once it has been restored.
From the information that I have found out it has been passed on to 2 or 3 different preservation people.
I really hope you can help me with my search or put me in the right direction to finding out more about it.

Article Request

Lindsey Amrani, Editor of Model Collector, is wondering if any members are model collectors,
and whether one of them may feel able to tackle an article on Leyland commercial vehicle models?
He says he'd be looking for a maximum of 2,000 words, but would also require high res images (300 dpi at 10cm x 10cm) or photographic access to models featured in the piece.
If anyone's interested, he'd love to hear from them so that the matter can be discussed.
Many thanks from
Lindsey Amrani

One of our members has sent us a photograph of an 8.6 litre aircraft style Dural connecting rod which he says has been in storage for 35 years, awaiting a plausible explanation. The bearing surfaces show only slight wear and are of standard size to suit a standard 3 inch crank journal. The small end contains a bronze bush to carry a fully floating gudgeon pin.
Leyland identification Nos.: Part No. LM Ltd. 135272C N11 (stamped)
Serial No. 3228 (stamped)
"63" stamped in a circle at both big and small ends.
There is a photograph of the item here. ( 517 Kb)
Total weight of rod complete with cap bolts and nuts = 1.93Kg.

If anyone feels strongly enough to save this historic part of Leyland for museum or display purposes, Nigel Ainsworth would be happy to arrange dispatch.

Responses should be directed to David Bishop.
